Standard Chartered Launches RLUSD Custody and Explores Institutional Collateral Use on XRPL
Standard Chartered has begun offering custody services for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin on the XRP Ledger. The bank is also working with Ripple and trading venue LMAX Group to allow institutions to use RLUSD as collateral for certain LMAX products through a collateral mirroring arrangement.
Standard Chartered has moved into custody of Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, making the XRP Ledger-native asset available to institutional clients through a major global bank for the first time. The announcement represents a concrete step toward integrating RLUSD into established financial infrastructure.
Beyond custody, the bank is collaborating with Ripple and LMAX Group on a collateral mirroring model. Under this arrangement, institutions would be able to post RLUSD as collateral against certain LMAX trading products, extending the stablecoin's utility beyond simple custody and into active capital markets workflows.
The involvement of LMAX Group, a regulated institutional FX and crypto trading venue, gives the arrangement added weight. Collateral eligibility at an institutional exchange is a meaningful step for any asset, as it signals a baseline level of counterparty acceptance and operational readiness.
For RLUSD and the XRP Ledger more broadly, having a globally recognized bank provide both custody and collateral services addresses two longstanding institutional requirements: safe-keeping and productive use of assets. This combination may encourage further institutional engagement with the XRPL ecosystem.
